What is Gold-filled?

One of the raisons d'être of the Solenn brand is to use ONLY gold filled for all gold-plated beads, primers and accessories. Other types of metal or qualities of gold plating have no place in our workshop. For us, this is an essential guarantee of the quality of the Solenn brand, and we'll explain why below.

Like gold plating, gold-filled is a metal used in jewelry. It is an American technique that is still little used in France.

Gold-plating results from a process in which a thin layer of gold, only 3 microns thick, is electroplated onto a metal base. In contrast to gold-plating, gold-filled is manufactured by applying a thick layer of gold to a metal base by hot pressing, traditionally in the order of 5 % to 10 % of the total thickness of the object. This means that gold-filled jewelry contains 50 to 100 times more gold than gold-plated jewelry.

Gold

Gold to 100%, unalloyed, offering the classic color and timeless brilliance sought after for millennia.

Gold-filled

Gold-filled combines the richness of gold with durability at an affordable price. It stands the test of time, won't tarnish and embodies enduring elegance.

Gold Vermeil

A plating technique that applies a thick layer of gold to 925 silver, combining solidity and prestige for a quality piece of jewelry.

Gold-plated

A thin layer of gold applied to a base metal, offering the appearance of gold at reduced cost, but with less durability than gold-filled or vermeil.

Gold-filled is designed to last, retaining its color and brilliance for years. A gold-filled jewel will not gradually lose its gold coating, as costume jewelry often does, as the gold layer is thicker and mechanically bonded to the base metal surface.
